Grow your own gardenThe other day a friend of mine was talking about how he got fed up with paying the exorbitant prices for produce at the supermarket and what he did to stop it. At first he started going to the local Farmer’s Market to get his produce, which had better prices for just about all of the vegetables he needed weekly. While he was there he met a co-worker who was actually helping his family sell some produce. Surprised, he asked him how his family started doing this and his friend explained that they started off with a small garden, just growing the produce they needed for their own cooking.

This got him thinking, and sometimes the seed of inspiration is all thats needed to get started on a great idea. He decided to start his own garden! A lot of you are thinking that starting your own vegetable garden is a crazy idea. It sounds like it’s hard work but according to my friend, it’s not that bad. He regularly tends to the plants around his house, so adding in a vegetable garden wasn’t that big of a deal in his eyes.

To get started, he decided to research and start small. He looked at the available space he had and decided to start off with trying to grow some fresh herbs. Herbs don’t really take a lot of space when they are starting out and he decided to be easy on himself and just keep them in the medium sized plots. So he tested the waters with some basil and few other herbs. He purchased the seedlings from a local nursery and took them home and replanted them in a medium sized pot. He watered them as needed and before he knew it, he and his had fresh herbs for the recipes for the week. This beat paying money each week to get herbs, and his garden could continue to grow the herbs as he needed them.

This led him to be a bit more adventurous, and before he knew it, he was planting carrots, potatoes and tomatoes. He has a small area for his home garden now and while it takes a bit more work, it really does save him money and he can say his produce is truly organic. I might start up my own small herb garden myself!
