Today’s money saving advice is a pretty simple one if not a no-brainer, easy to-do tip. That said, a lot of us forget to do these things!
Today’s simple advice is to turn the lights off when you’re not using them. Sounds silly, but it’s a money saving tip! Everytime you turn off your lights, you are saving energy. Saving energy means you pay less money for your electricity bill! Don’t think it makes a difference? It really works!
An organization a friend works at has many offices in it. Their utilities bill for electricity alone was close to 5-digits a month! They found that many staff members were leaving their computers on, or had them sleeping after they had left work. Even a computer that’s “asleep” is using electricity. There were also certain employees that had mini-refrigerators in their offices. These employees were asked to remove them in order to save electricity. By doing these two things, it cut the bill down to a manageable 4-digit a month payment for electricity.
You can do this at your home as well. If you have devices that need power, put them on power-strips so you can power them all off when they aren’t in use. Did you know AC adaptors that are used to power or charge most devices used electricity even though nothing is on or attached to them? Using a power-strip can stop the the drain of electricity on your pocketbook!
Forming good habits like turning off lights when you’re not in a room, turning off power-strips to make sure that appliances and devices don’t suck electricity needlessly can really save you money in the long run.
How can we save money by saving energy?
- Turn out the lights when you leave a room or if no one is in the room
- Turn off your electricity eating devices by either unplugging them or getting a power-strip
- Turn your computer off at night instead of letting it sleep.
- Buy Energy Star compliant appliances if you plan on replacing any in your house. Look for the Energy Star seal. Be careful though! Not every appliance with the Energy Star seal saves the same amount of energy when in use! They all vary so do some research!
